Summary
In Maharashtra, a leading steel plant faced electronic card failures through electronic corrosion due to gas leakage through recovery lines from coke oven plant. Airgineers® conducted corrosion assessments, suggesting the urgent need for enhanced air quality for electronic corrosion protection. Bry-Air’s tailored Gas Phase Filtration system (Data Center AirPurifier), effectively reduced corrosion levels, ensuring a conducive environment for electronic systems. Post-installation testing confirmed successful electronic corrosion protection, highlighting Bry-Air’s commitment to industrial reliability
Problem/Source
A Coke Oven plant generates various gaseous contaminants during the coal baking process such as methane, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, SOx, NOx, etc. Despite having a mechanism to capture and repurpose these gases, the plant experienced significant issues due to leakages in the gas transfer lines or recovery lines. These leakages led to corrosion attacks on critical electronic equipment in nearby areas. Consequently, there were frequent failures in server rooms, VFD rooms, and DCS rooms. The electronic cards in these systems showed high rates of failure, with visible corrosion on the electrical circuits.
Corrosion Assessment
To understand the extent of the corrosion, Airgineers® conducted tests using Corrosion Classification Coupons in the server rooms and other critical areas. The tests revealed G2 class conditions for Copper (Cu) and G3 class conditions for Silver (Ag) as per the ISA Standard. These readings highlighted the need for improved air quality to reduce the corrosion levels affecting the electronics. Electronic corrosion protection was deemed necessary to ensure the longevity and reliability of the electronic systems.

Installation of Bry-Air DataCenter Air Purifier
Airgineers® discussed the Corrosion Classification Coupon results with the plant’s Instrumentation and IT teams and suggested implementing Gas Phase Filtration (GPF) systems to address the air quality issues in the rooms housing electronic equipment. After a detailed site survey, they recommended the installation of specific GPF systems tailored to the site conditions.
Given that the server and DCS rooms were combined into a large room, the plant constructed smaller rooms for their critical electronics. Bry-Air suggested using the Data Center AirPurifier (DAP) model with four stages to reduce corrosion levels effectively. This solution was specifically designed for electronic corrosion protection in environments with high contamination levels.
Airgineers® assured the customer of post-installation corrosion testing to prove the performance of the GPF equipment in the Coke Oven plant. The installation of the Bry-Air DataCenter Air Purifier in the steel plant brings several benefits, including:
Bry-Air offers a range of Gas Phase Filtration Systems with different capacities to meet specific requirements. These models include:
