Frequently Asked Questions

Chemical media selection depends on the target contaminant, concentration, airflow, temperature, relative humidity, operating hours and required removal efficiency. A proper gas phase filtration media selection should therefore be based on the actual operating conditions and contaminant profile.

Important parameters include contaminant type, contaminant concentration, airflow/CFM, temperature, relative humidity, operating hours, filter dimensions and required media life. This information helps determine the appropriate chemical filter media and filter configuration.

Higher contaminant concentrations generally increase the rate at which the active capacity of chemical filtration media is consumed. Therefore, contaminant concentration is an important parameter when estimating gas-phase filter media life and replacement intervals.

Airflow determines the quantity of contaminated air passing through the media and influences contact time between the gas and the adsorbent. Correct airflow and face velocity are therefore important for effective gas-phase filtration and media-life estimation.

Humidity can influence adsorption and chemical reaction mechanisms in activated carbon and impregnated chemical media. Excessive moisture may compete for adsorption sites or affect the performance of certain media formulations.

Remaining media life can be assessed using operating conditions, contaminant loading, historical replacement data and, where appropriate, laboratory testing. A chemical media life assessment can provide a more reliable basis for replacement planning.

Possible indicators include increased contaminant concentration downstream, breakthrough of the target gas, deterioration in corrosion-control performance or laboratory evidence of reduced media capacity. These indicators should be evaluated before chemical filter media replacement.

If reactive gases pass through exhausted media, the downstream environment may again be exposed to corrosive contaminants. Timely gas-phase filter media replacement can therefore be an important part of an electronic and equipment corrosion-control strategy.
