Electronic corrosion prevention at 3G Hutchison
We are all familiar with the name of Hutchison. Problem faced by 3G Hutchison in server rooms:
Computer / Electronic corrosion and odour problem caused by outside pollution composed of corrosive gases in the surrounding environment due to nearby large drain and landfill area.
  Main cause for the problem :
Gas Purification System
The company's office is located in the Malad area of Mumbai known for its numerous landfill sites, waste dumpage areas. The source of the problem were landfill sites near the office which blanketed the whole area with corrosive gases and an obnoxious foul odour. The odours were caused by the presence of hydrogen sulphide gas in methane, which was continuously generated due to the gradual degradation of organic material at the land fill sites nearby. (Methane, on its own has no odour and thus, is not considered as a contaminant). The gaseous contaminants in the form of outside pollution composed of Hydrogen Sulphide (H S), Sulphur Dioxide (SO ), 2 2 Bromine and Oxides of Nitrogen, Chlorine, etc. were invariably seeping into the server room. These corrosive gases were then reacting with copper and silver in electronic circuit boards, server cards, EVA, cooling equipments, datacom connections resulting in electronic corrosion and degradation of the reliability of electronic equipments. This was causing break down of computer systems and servers, disrupting work and resulting in loss of business and downtime. To add to the woes, people working in the plush air conditioned 3G Hutchison office were feeling extremely uncomfortable which led to a loss in productivity too.
Furthering the problem was the wind direction. If the wind direction is towards the building from the contaminant generating zone, then the after effect was quite contrary to the one when its the other way round. Fluctuation in concentrations in gaseous contaminants : Hydrogen Sulphide emission from the landfill peaks when the temperature and humidity is high and carries on till the land mass is relatively warm. Hence, the rotten eggsmell starts off by mid afternoon and continues till late evenings. During the summer months, the emissions are significantly higher.
