Humidity Control for Paper Coating

image

Paper coating is a process in which the paper is coated with specific compound or polymer  such as Kaolinite, Calcium Carbonate or Bentonite, to impart desired characteristics in the paper  which enhances the qulaity of performance and printability. These characteristics include change in weight, surface gloss, smoothness or reduced ink absorbency.

These types of coated papers are mostly used in packaging and publishing industry.

Effects of Uncontrolled Humidity

The major component of paper, cellulose fiber, is hygroscopic in nature. Although paper sheds most of its moisture during the manufacturing process, it tends to regain moisture, particularly along the edges, during packaging and storage.

Various Problems observed in coated paper due to Moisture are:-

  • Unevenness and curling
  • Limped paper
  • Sticky
  • Increase/Decrease in paper dimensions with increase/decrease in moisture content

Causes of Uncontrolled Humidity

The ambient conditions/production environment plays a major role in the humid environment along with the weather conditions. While the weather conditions are unpredictable, a minor deviation in the environmental; conditions can lead to high level of humidity.

Bry-Air Solution

Bry-Air Dehumidifiers can lower the moisture content of the surrounding air in the manufacturing, packaging and storage areas to the desired level and help upgrade the quality of the paper in terms of its performance and printability.
