DATA CENTERS
Water Availability for Mission-Critical Infrastructure:
THE DATA CENTER WATER CHALLENGE
For a data center, reliable water availability is becoming an increasingly important consideration during site selection, cooling-system design and facility expansion.
While many data centers have access to conventional water sources, some sites face a fundamentally different challenge: there is insufficient water available for the planned cooling requirement, water connections cannot be established, or the use of water for cooling is restricted or prohibited.
In such locations, the question is not simply how to reduce the cost of externally sourced water—it is how to make the site operationally viable when conventional water is not available.
Bry-Air Air Water Generators (AWG) generate water on-site by extracting moisture from ambient air, creating a potential water source for data centers in locations where conventional water availability is limited or unavailable.
AWG can therefore be evaluated not only as a supplementary source, but as an enabling technology for data center sites where securing conventional water is a major constraint.
THE DATA CENTER WATER CHALLENGE
In many locations, access to conventional water is limited, restricted or unavailable, making it a critical challenge for data center development and operations.
NO WATER CONNECTION
The site does not have access to a reliable municipal or other conventional water supply.
WATER USE RESTRICTIONS
Local regulations, water scarcity or site-specific policies restrict the use of conventional water for cooling.
WATER INFRASTRUCTURE UNAVAILABLE
Establishing water infrastructure is difficult, costly or impractical in remote or water-constrained locations.
AWG
ON-SITE WATER GENERATION
A RELIABLE SOURCE, INDEPENDENT
OF CONVENTIONAL SUPPLY
Bry-Air AWG extracts moisture from ambient air to generate water on-site, helping enable data centers in water-constrained locations.
WHY SHOULD A DATA CENTER OPERATOR CONSIDER AWG?
Make Water-Constrained Sites Viable
Provide a potential on-site water source where conventional water infrastructure is unavailable, inadequate or restricted.
Enable Water-Dependent Cooling
Support cooling strategies that require water even when conventional water access cannot be secured.
Reduce Dependence on Water Infrastructure
Minimize reliance on municipal connections, tanker logistics or long-distance water transportation.
Improve Site Selection Flexibility
Allow operators to evaluate locations where water availability would otherwise limit development or expansion.
Build Water Resilience
Provide an additional source of water for critical operations and reduce dependence on a single external supply.
Support Future Expansion
Modular AWG systems can be configured and scaled as IT capacity and water requirements increase.
WHAT DETERMINES AWG VIABILITY?
AWG performance is highly dependent on the site's atmospheric conditions and the intended water application. The most important engineering inputs are:
| Site / Facility Parameter | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| Temperature & Relative Humidity | Determines atmospheric water availability and AWG output |
| Cooling Technology | Determines where and how AWG water can be integrated |
| Water Requirement | Establishes required generation and storage capacity |
| Water Availability | Determines whether AWG is being evaluated as a primary, supplementary or resilience source |
| Water Quality Specification | Determines treatment and conditioning requirements |
| Operating Profile | Determines daily and annual water demand |
| Space & Infrastructure | Determines equipment, storage and integration configuration |
| Redundancy Requirement | Defines the required system architecture for mission-critical operations |
There is no one-size-fits-all AWG configuration for a data center.
A proper assessment combines the site's climate profile with its actual water requirement, cooling architecture and, critically, the availability and accessibility of conventional water at the site.
AWG AS A SITE-ENABLING WATER SOURCE
Depending on site conditions, AWG can play different roles in a data center's water strategy.
SUPPLEMENTARY SOURCE
Where conventional water is available but AWG can supplement existing sources and provide additional resilience.
RESILIENCE SOURCE
Providing additional on-site water availability during periods of supply disruption or restriction.
PRIMARY SOURCE
Where conventional water is unavailable or cannot support the required application.
SITE-ENABLING SOURCE
Supporting data center development in locations where access to conventional water would otherwise constrain feasibility.
